Staff Profile
He uses his expertise in statistical modelling of climatology and oceanography problems under projects supported by Australian Government, Western Australian State Government and CSIRO Climate Adaptation Flagship. Dr Li has developed scientifically appropriate models for a range of problems that can be characterized as nonlinear and complex. He has developed deep expertise in statistical modeling of extreme rainfall events, and focuses on developing a high degree of expertise in statistical downscaling models using a nonparametric and semi-parametric modelling approach. He is the CMIS supervisor of the PhD program "Nonparametric and Semi-parametric Modelling of Spatial Data", supported by a CSIRO Corporate Postgraduate Scholarship and an Australian Postgraduate Award from the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Western Australia. Dr Li has developed and managed a cross-discipline, international project project "Research on Rainfall and Climate Change in both China and Australia" funded through the Australia-China Bilateral Climate Change Partnership, run by Australian Department of Climate Change. He has been invited to serve as a guest professor of the National Key Laboratory of Numerical Modelling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG), Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) since May 2009.
