Smarter Information Use
At CSIRO Mathematics, Informatics and Statistics, we help organisations
to use information in smarter ways.
This focus is supported by our research directions and responds to
real industry needs. 'Smart information use' is a goal of the Federal
Government's national research priorities for growing world-class
Australian industries.
Focussing on the figures
Today’s knowledge economy runs on information. Organisations spend
millions of dollars collecting, organising and interpreting information
that will help them make better decisions.
Much of the information they rely on is quantitative. It comes in the
form of figures like resource allocations, gene expression levels, plant
throughputs, ore mill efficiencies, land clearing rates and price
volatility, to name a few.
Our focus stems from an expectation that our advanced mathematical,
computational and statistical know-how can generate quantitative
information products and services that can add real value for Australian
organisations, particularly those in:
- health
- biotechnology
- manufacturing
- mining
- environment
- services
A special area of expertise is in dealing with what we call 'wicked
systems' - large, complex systems that often require new, sophisticated
approaches to understand. To complement this, we often partner with
other researchers in CSIRO - drawing on a breadth of knowledge that is
one of CSIRO's strengths.
Our focus is supported by our research directions, in response to
real industry needs. To make it easier for organisations to engage with
us and to enable us to provide an integrated service, we have these
research themes:
Discovery Bioinformatics and Imaging
Extracting important knowledge from complex data to improve
Australia's agribusiness and health.
We apply and expand our expertise in data management to help
pharmaceutical companies, government health agencies, agricultural
producers and others to achieve better quality healthcare and higher
agricultural yields.

Environmental Modelling and Monitoring
Expert statistical capabilities for the acquisition, analysis
and assessment of environmental information.
CSIRO statisticians can make a contribution to major environmental
studies that have very high social, political and economic impact. We
are able to integrate physical and statistical models into a single
framework to enable environmental managers make better decisions.

Decision Technologies
Providing the quantitative information tools businesses need to
optimise operations and improving manufacturing and mineral processing
through specialist expertise in data analysis, data synthesis,
mathematical modelling, simulation and optimisation.
Our expertise allows decision makers to understand their data and make
reliable, productive and informed decisions about their business,
thereby delivering value.
