Mathematics for Mapping and Monitoring

Monitoring Land Cover Change for Carbon Accounting

How does Australia, or any country for that matter, know if it is meeting its greenhouse emissions targets?

Accurate measurements are needed to show progress towards the 108% emissions target in the Kyoto protocol.

CSIRO has contributed to Australia’s National Carbon Accounting System (NCAS), which is administered by the Australian Greenhouse Office. NCAS is a world-leading land-based carbon accounting system which guides Australia’s greenhouse policy and planning.

Our CSIRO Medal-winning team worked with the Australian Greenhouse Office to create maps of the vegetation cover changes across the entire Australian continent, at a resolution of 25 metres, from 1972 to 2002. This is the first time any country has achieved such comprehensive mapping and makes accurate emissions measurements possible.

“. . . the most robust continental scale earth observation data set of its type ever assembled.”
