Research Excellence
Our research is focussed on delivering 'smarter information use' -
helping organisations use information in smarter ways. Our research
responds to the real needs of information
intensive industries. We partner with
organisations to help define and solve information use challenges and
create real impact such as improved healthcare
services or higher factory throughput.
Our focus stems from an expectation that advanced mathematical,
computational and statistical know-how can generate quantitative
information products and services that add real value for Australian
organisations.
Researchers at CSIRO Mathematics, Informatics and Statisticshave an
impressive track record of research achievement in computation,
mathematics and statistics, and world-class skills in:
- Data analysis - 'mining' data to extract useful information
- Modelling - creating numerical 'pictures' of processes to
better understand them
- Simulation - testing different scenarios using statistical or
mathematics models
- Optimisation - finding the best operating conditions for a
process
A special area of expertise is in dealing with large, complex systems
that can't be understood by traditional means. To complement our
expertise, we often partner with other researchers in CSIRO - drawing on a
breadth of knowledge that is one of CSIRO's strengths.
We also collaborate with leading computational, mathematical and
statistical researchers in Australia and around the world.
