π

'Pi' is the number you get when you divide a circle's circumference by its diameter.

Known about for thousands of years, pi got its name and symbol in 1706.

We usually know its value as 3.14 but supercomputers can calculate it to over a trillion decimal places and it never stops or repeats.

Mathematicians find pi a very useful constant. Find out more about what mathematicians and statisticians do in CSIRO.
