Media Releases from 2006

15 December 2006 - Maths a priority area for growth says CSIRO - CSIRO welcomes the recommendations of a review of the state of the mathematical sciences in Australia which was released yesterday by a committee of the Australian Academy of Science.

1 November 2006 - Australia and China: Eyes in the sky to monitor climate change - CSIRO and the Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping (CASM) signed a research agreement in Beijing today to collaborate on China’s resource mapping satellite program. Images

13 October 2006 - Nerve cell software keeps track of brain change - Brain research will get a boost tomorrow (14 October) as CSIRO launches in the United States its HCA-Vision nerve cell analysis software at Neuroscience 2006 in Atlanta, Georgia, the world's largest conference for brain researchers.
HCA-Vision is based on a proprietary mathematical method, patented by Australia’s CSIRO, for automatically tracing and measuring lines in complex images. Images

30 March 2006 - Virtual swimmer to speed up our athletes - CSIRO and the Australian Institute of Sport are using mathematics in a bid to speed up our top swimmers by testing changes to swimming strokes.
The research will make use of the same software CSIRO uses for other fluid simulations such as animating water for movies and modelling volcanoes and tsunamis. Researchers are hoping to see some practical results in time to implement improvements for the London Olympics in 2012. Image

15 February 2006 - Summer scientists have a Big Day In - Instead of tidying racks at a department store or pulling beers at the pub this summer, 74 university students are taking the chance to find out what it’s like to be a scientist - and getting paid for it.

1 February 2006 - Brain researchers get a head start - CSIRO software released today will help Australian neuroscience researchers discover new treatments for people with neurodegenerative diseases.
The software, HCA-Vision, was unveiled at the 26th Australian Neuroscience Society conference being held in Sydney this week. It runs on a standard PC and will help researchers track changes in the appearance of neurons, a type of nerve cell. Images

26 September 2005 - CSIRO statisticians confirm: It’s been 75 years! - This week CSIRO celebrates 75 years since its first foray into statistics - a branch of mathematics that revolutionised agricultural science and promises new insights to biotechnology. Images

22 August 2005 - China and Australia Forge the TIES That Bind - China and Australia are forging new scientific links at an environmental statistics conference organised by the two countries which starts today.
Issues such as climate change, water resources, and environmental effects on human health are just some of those up for discussion at The International Environmetrics Society (TIES) conference being held at the Friendship Hotel, Beijing on 22-26 August. Images.

2 August 2005 - Privacy software to unlock health data goldmine - CSIRO has developed unique privacy software to allow health data collections to be used to improve the health of Australian people.
