General Statistical Consulting

I have been involved in statistical consulting on a wide variety of topics. Tow that I wish to particularly highlight are the following.

Modelling of traffic on rural roads.
The simulation model, TRARR, which I wrote while at the Australian Road Research Board is still widely used for helping to plan climbing lines and overtaking lanes. The core of the program is essentially unchanged. See papers 3 to 6 in the list below.

Estimation of genetic merit of dairy cattle.
The methods implemented in about 1982 by a group of which I was a crucial member are still used for Australia-wide estimation of genetic merit for dairy cattle. We were the first group in the world to fit models including cows' genetic merits as well as bulls', solving about a million simultaneous equations rather than ten thousand. See papers 8-11 in the list below.

John van der Touw and I later used similar methodology in a procedure for ranking badminton players which was used in
particular for the 1992 Olympics. (Use of this methodology stopped because the International Badminton Federation
wanted a system which allowed more accurate prediction of how much a player's rating would be changed by the result of a forthcoming match.) See papers 22 and 23 in the list below.
