Indian Ocean Climate Initiative

Indian Ocean Climate Initiative

The Indian Ocean Climate Initiative (IOCI) is an initiative of the Western Australian State Government. The objective of IOCI is to foster strategic climate research that will underpin a wide range of applications delivering products to manage climate risk. IOCI is focused on Western Australia, providing greater understanding of the West Australian climate, both at decadal and inter-seasonal time scales.

IOCI is needed because climate research in Australia has tended to be focused on the eastern states, for at least two reasons. First, the El-Niño Southern Oscillation phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean provides a strong basis for predictability in the eastern states; second, the vast majority of the population is in the eastern states. In Western Australia the strongest influences on our climate are likely to be found in the Indian and Southern Oceans, and relatively little research has focused on these oceans.
