The Indian Ocean Climate Initiative (IOCI) is an initiative of the Western
Australian State Government. The objective of IOCI is to foster strategic
climate research that will underpin a wide range of applications
delivering products to manage climate risk. IOCI is focused on Western
Australia, providing greater understanding of the West Australian climate,
both at decadal and inter-seasonal time scales. For more information

IOCI is needed because climate research in Australia has tended to be
focused on the eastern states, for at least two reasons. First, the
El-Niño Southern Oscillation phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean provides
a strong basis for predictability in the eastern states; second, the vast
majority of the population is in the eastern states. In Western Australia
the strongest influences on our climate are likely to be found in the
Indian and Southern Oceans, and relatively little research has focused on
these oceans.
