Environmental Monitoring and Risk Assessment

Resource managers and environmental policy makers are increasingly searching for reliable quantitative information to help them make good decisions.

Some of this information is in the form of risks and probabilities, based on observations of the environment.

CSIRO helps resource managers by effectively analysing the underlying risks posed to environmental systems.

Projects

We are involved in a diverse range of risk assessment projects including:

  • Modelling the environmental conditions when it is most likely that shellfish will be unfit for human consumption
  • Assessing the impact of pesticides on water quality
  • Modelling the risk of disease transfer to and from Australia via imported and exported goods such as pig meat, bananas and hay
  • Modelling sheep blowfly strike in terms of weather, pasture conditions etc. to alert graziers when expected strike rate is high
  • Estimating toxicity on untested species using inference from species where toxicity is known
  • Assessing trends in water quality to predict areas of high health risk in north Queensland
  • Analysing the survival of perennial grasses in semi-arid rangelands under impacts of drought and grazing
  • Assessing risk of importing bananas from Philippines

  • Offsite Effects of Pesticides in the Philippines and Australia

  • Assessing risk of Arsenic poisoning to Bengal residents

Products

  • Pesticide Impact Rating Index - PIRI

  • Sewerage Leak Index - SLeakI

  • Disease Risk Index - DIRI

  • Aquifer Storage & Recovery Risk Index – ASRRI
