Modelling of Industrial Granular Flows

The production, processing and transport of particulate or granular materials, such as minerals, powders or cereals, is of immense industrial importance. Yet, while a lot is known about the flow of gases and liquids, much less is known about the movements of granular material.

Research at CMIS has led to the development of Discrete Element Method (DEM) codes that allow many granular flow processes to be studied. These processes include separation and mixing (such as in making glass and drugs), milling, grinding and crushing (such as in ball mills and centrifugal mills), blasting and fracturing, rotary moulding, bulk material sampling, blending and stockpile construction, flows in hoppers, silos and bins, conveyor belts, open cut mining and excavation.

Review tutorial on DEM given by Prof Ugur Tuzun and Dr Paul Cleary at 5th World Congress of Particle Technology, April 2006, Florida, USA- click on the link to download in pdf format
