Applied sensor network design

A sensor network is a network consisting of several independent, wirelessly-connected sensors that are capable of monitoring and measuring physical and environmental conditions. Sensor location decisions are complicated by geographical, technological, and quality considerations. As part of CSIRO-wide initiatives in sensors and sensor networks, our group is developing tools/software for solving the sensor location decision problem...

Scheduling naval boats, crews and missions

CSIRO scientists have worked with the Royal Australian Navy and the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) to solve some important fleet scheduling challenges... CSIRO's task was to determine week-by-week timings for mission-deployments and maintenance activities for the Navy's patrol boat fleet over the course of a year, and to assign those activities amongst crews, boats and ports.

Adaptive Health Resource Networks

A focus of the ASN team's activity is in the study and development of future Adaptive Health Resource Networks. We carry out whole of system research in the area of health service operational efficiency. The work involves research into patient flow modelling, health network modelling, and demand modelling and management, with the specific aim of developing decision support tool for planning and scheduling the resource allocations needed to best meet current and future patient needs for health services...

Improving public transport

LITRES-2 is a CSIRO-developed software system that can simulate the operations of urban public transport services, in order to assess their likely performance. It includes modules designed to aid in the implementation of demand-responsive transport services...

Workforce Rostering

For most organisations, human resources form a large component of the total budget. Moreover, modern day workplaces have complex work rules and current industry trends encourage flexible workplace agreements. Businesses are under a lot of pressure to be demand responsive, to deploy the right number and mix of personnel at all times. These conditions present challenges and opportunities to optimise the deployment of personnel, a valuable resource of any business. CSIRO has developed a suite of software modules that together form our Staff Rostering Toolkit.

Work undertaken by the CSIRO Operations Research Group

Prior to establishing the Adaptive Supply Networks stream in 2004, CSIRO had an Operations Research Group. Many of the members of ASN were in the OR group. You can read about the client work undertaken by the OR Group up to 2003.
