R&D Career Opportunity for a Software Engineer in developing leading edge Data Mining Systems 

We have exciting opportunities for one or two software engineers to join a successful team developing innovative data mining solutions for industry and public sector clients. The Enterprise Data Mining group has on-going research projects developing innovative solutions for data mining massive linked administrative health databases to improve health service delivery.

You will work as part of the team on tasks including design and implementation of experimental data mining systems. In addition to challenging software development goals, we will negotiate a 2-year personal development program that combines on-the-job training and off-site courses. This will leave you equipped as an experienced and skilled professional in a specialist area of interest such as distributed systems, database systems or data mining.

To be competitive, you will need a strong degree in Computer Science or Information Technology. An Honours degree and / or work experience would be an advantage. You will also have a commitment to acquiring and using new skills, and be prepared to take on varied and changing roles. Significant interaction with industry, public sector and researchers is an important aspect of this role.

Role Title:           Software Engineer
Project Area:       Enterprise Data Mining Group
Location:             Canberra
Reports to:          Group Leader
Classification:     CSOF 4/5


Duties are numbered in order of importance

  1. Participate as a team member designing, developing, testing and documenting software systems within the Enterprise Data Mining research group. Specific areas relevant to this position are:

  • Data Mining systems
  • Database systems
  • Java applications development
  • Systems analysis and design
  • Internet/Intranet distributed environments

  1. Collaborate with research and industry groups on R&D projects, particularly those with benefit to industry.

  2. Contribute to the development of CSIRO through its Divisional activities.

  3. Other duties as directed

Prerequisite

A degree in Computer Science or equivalent qualification with relevant experience.

Essential
  1. Problem Solving

    Demonstrated ability to define and solve problems in the design and implementation of computer software.

  2. Application of Knowledge

    Understanding and ability to apply knowledge of the following:

    • software engineering techniques and design methodologies including analysis, specification, design, development and testing;
    • Java , C, Python, Perl and/or C++ programming languages; and
    • complex application development in Unix (Solaris, Debian) environments 

      Experience in one or more of the following areas is desirable:

    • Application development using a relational database management system;
    • Software project management

  3. Communication

    Capacity to communicate effectively and to transfer knowledge at a technical level with
    professionals in research and industry. Ability to work in a team.

  4. Adaptability

    Demonstrated ability to develop expertise in new software tools and an appreciation of new applications areas in information technology.

  5. Resource Management

    Demonstrated ability to accomplish objectives despite conflicting demands.

  6. Judgement

    Capacity to make sound recommendations on technical issues.

  7. Independence

    Capacity to work under limited direction towards agreed project objectives.

Desirable
Experience in one or more of the following areas

  • Internet standards: HTML, XML
  • Data mining or data analysis platforms such as SAS, SPSS, Matlab, S-Plus;
  • Use of GNU development tools.
