Manufacturing
Smarter information use for more profitable manufacturing
They may not be as tangible as the people or equipment on your factory
floor, but mathematics and statistics are helping manufacturers to improve
their profitability.
Our specialists can increase profitability for manufacturers
through:
- Increasing production rates
- Improving process control and understanding process variation
- Enhancing product design
- Optimising scheduling and logistics
- Managing maintenance and replacement of infrastructure
- Setting warranties more accurately
We bring a broad range of skills to manufacturing problems, including:
- simulation and advanced mathematical and statistical modelling
- computational fluid dynamics
- statistical process monitoring, analysis and control
- reliability modelling
- scheduling and logistics
- operations research

Our customers say . . .
CSIRO used mathematical modelling to help James Hardie to improve their
processes for making re-enforced cement building products. The resulting
increase in production rates was substantial.
"I don't like putting a dollar figure on the value of an individual
contribution because, in business, everything is a group effort. What I
can say is that CSIRO's work has paid itself over hundreds of times, both
directly and indirectly, and that means millions of dollars." - Noel
Thompson Chief Technology Officer, James Hardie
Australia's largest winemaker, Southcorp, now produces an extra 500
cases of wine a day, thanks to our scheduling expertise. CSIRO created a
computer program to calculate changeover times between their 800 different
products. Southcorp engineers now use this to find better ways to sequence
production and maximise the efficiency of their operations.
“Before, we were working off our instincts and knew a few
manufacturing techniques that worked well. But working with algorithms
means you can see many combinations and choose the optimal manufacturing
techniques available. The evidence is on our trucks leaving the factory.”
- Bernard Zanic Processing Engineer, Southcorp.
